Seeping through the distance, enthralling each surrounding element of sound to render various atmospheres, haunting vocals have a particularly captivating effect within music. They lure you into the depths of darkness, carry you through nostalgic memories of your life, tease you into a false sense of security, drift your mind through the unexplainable and calm you into material comforts. Here we celebrate the effects human vocals have on us. How in so many tones, matched with various tempos and sounds, vocals can address a deep, lingering, spiritual feeling. There can be something otherworldly about the voice, in sound and in meaning.
Any list of haunting vocals should mention the Ghost In The Shell OST – those notes follow me into my sleep! Though I’ve added a song from the Akira OST instead because lots of you have probably heard/seen GITS recently.
Speaking of sleep, I have before actually awoken from a nightmare involving Alex Cameron‘s greasy mug telling me to “Taste it… It’s just water…. I promise…” The vocals from She’s Mine are haunting in the most literal sense.
If you’re into haunting (Gregorian) chants go check out the Prince Nifty blog post we published not too long ago! I had a dig around youtube videos of religious chanting for you and picked two vids, near the bottom:
